5 Signs It’s Time to Take Your Pet to the Vet

As pet owners, we all want to keep our furry companions healthy and happy. But sometimes, the signs that something’s wrong aren’t always obvious. At Cumberland Animal Hospital in Fayetteville, NC, we’re here to help you know when it’s time to bring your pet in for a check-up.

1.  Changes in Appetite or Water Intake

Is your dog skipping meals? Is your cat suddenly drinking a lot more water than usual?
These changes could be symptoms of:

  • Dental disease
  • Kidney or liver issues
  • Diabetes
  • Digestive problems

Tip: If the change lasts more than 24-48 hours, it’s best to let a vet investigate.

2.  Vomiting or Diarrhea That Doesn’t Go Away

A single episode might just be something they ate, but repeated vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration or signal something serious, such as:

  • Parasites
  • Intestinal blockages
  • Infections
  • Food allergies or poisoning

Watch for: Blood in stool or vomit, lethargy, or loss of appetite alongside GI symptoms.

3. Limping, Stiffness, or Trouble Getting Up

Sudden limping or stiffness, especially after rest or play, may be more than just soreness. It could indicate:

  • Joint or ligament injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia (especially in larger breeds)
  • Neurological problems

Older pets are especially prone to mobility issues, so keep an eye on changes in activity or hesitation to jump or climb stairs.

4. Unusual Lumps, Bumps, or Skin Changes

Not every lump is a cause for panic, but it’s always better to be cautious. Have any new or growing masses checked to rule out:

  • Benign cysts
  • Infections or abscesses
  • Tumors (benign or malignant)
  • Skin allergies or parasites

Early detection is key to effective treatment – don’t wait and see.

5. Behavioral Changes or Personality Shifts

Is your usually-friendly dog becoming aggressive? Is your affectionate cat hiding more than usual?
Behavior changes can be subtle signs of:

  • Pain
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Thyroid imbalances
  • Neurological issues

Trust your instincts. You know your pet best. If they’re acting “off,” a vet exam can help uncover the cause.
