Pet Boarding in the Summer Months

Summertime is the ideal traveling season for a lot of people. Many people will wait until children are out of school for the summer or until temperatures get warmer to take their vacations. For many families, when they go, they have to find a place that they can trust to board their pets. Deciding where to board your pets when you go out of town is not an easy decision, but if you keep these things in mind, the process will be smoother.

If at all possible, the best place to board your pets is with their veterinarian. Your veterinarian is already familiar with your pets and their unique needs. You will likely find great peace of mind while you are gone knowing that your pet is being cared for by a staff that knows them. Your pet is more likely to acclimate to the change easier as well.

Whether you are able to board your pet with their veterinarian or not, call well in advance to make boarding arrangements. Because of the volume of people taking vacations, veterinarian offices and pet boarding facilities tend to fill up more quickly than at other times during the year with the exception of November and December. The more notice you can give your veterinarian, the better.

Wherever you decide to board your pet, find out their rules and guidelines for pet boarding. Will you need to provide your own pet food? What shots need to be current before they can stay? Do they need to be on preventive medication for fleas and ticks before they arrive? When can you drop your pet off and when will the facility be open for you to pick them up? Can you bring your pets favorite toy to keep with them?
